Family Dispute Results in One Dead in Rio Linda

On a cloudy and blustery Sunday afternoon (Feb 26) around 3pm, California Highway Patrol officers were investigating an accident in the area of 8th Street and U Street in Rio Linda, when they heard gunshots.

As they investigated, they found a man lying in the driveway at 801 U Street with multiple gunshot wounds.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies “pulled the body to safety while they called out residents from that house” and attempted life-saving measures.

The sheriff’s office said the victim, who the family of the victim has identified as 43-year-old Russell Mawyer, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Also according to the family, Mawyer’s brother Richard Mawyer is the prime suspect. The family also states that the brothers have been fighting often over the last 2-3 weeks, and an incident like this was not unexpected.

Sad to say but bad things were bound to happen with those boys for a long time coming. Maybe Nikki can get her house back.

Again, according to the family, Richard Mawyer left the scene by stealing a car and fleeing. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office says that they detained two people from inside the house on Sunday. They are also reporting this morning that they have a suspect in custody. It is not known if the suspect is Richard Mawyer, or if Richard was one of the detainees.

The investigation continues and we hope to have a media release from the Sacramento County Sheriff by the end of the day.
