The Sacramento community mourns the loss of Coach Mike Alberghini, a legendary figure at Grant Union High School, who passed away on February 14, 2025, at the age of 78. Known affectionately as “Coach Al,” Alberghini dedicated over five decades to the school, profoundly impacting both its athletic programs and the lives of countless students.

To honor Coach Alberghini’s life and legacy, his family and Grant Union High School will host a memorial service on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at 1 p.m. at the school’s stadium. The community is invited to join in celebrating the man who poured his heart and soul into the school and its students.

Alberghini’s tenure at Grant Union High School spanned 53 years, during which he served as a teacher and coach. For 31 of those years, he led the varsity football team, transforming the Pacers into a powerhouse in Sacramento high school football. Under his guidance, the team achieved remarkable success, including an undefeated 14-0 season in 2008 that culminated in a victory over Long Beach Poly in the CIF Open Division state championship—a milestone celebrated as one of the most significant wins in Sacramento’s prep football history.

Beyond the impressive records and titles, Coach Alberghini was revered for his unwavering commitment to his students and the Del Paso Heights community. He was known to go above and beyond, often providing transportation for players to ensure they could attend practices and return home safely. His dedication extended off the field, as he worked tirelessly to support students’ academic and personal growth.

In recognition of his contributions, the stadium field at Grant Union High School was dedicated to Alberghini in 2015, a testament to his lasting legacy at the institution.

As Principal Darris Hinson expressed, “High school football and Friday Night Lights have lost an icon in Coach Alberghini. The entire Pacer4Life community mourns his passing, and we send our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.”
