The Sacramento County Department of Homeless Services and Housing (DHSH) has announced an extension of the weather respite shelter at the Warren E. Thornton Youth Center (WETYC), located at 4000 Branch Center Road, Sacramento, CA 95827. Originally set to close earlier, the shelter will now remain open through Thursday, January 2, 2025, due to ongoing sporadic inclement weather and the holiday season.
This decision, made in collaboration with First Step Communities, ensures that unhoused residents have a consistent place to find relief from the cold. Regional Transit is providing free ride support to the shelter during this period.

Tips for Staying Safe in Cold Weather
With chilly temperatures in the forecast, Sacramento County officials urge residents to take precautions:
Check on Vulnerable Neighbors
- Ensure seniors, those with serious medical conditions, and other vulnerable community members are staying warm and safe.
Protect Pets
- Bring pets indoors during freezing temperatures. Ensure they have a warm, draft-free space with a blanket or mat to lie on. Visit the Bradshaw Animal Shelter website for more winter pet safety tips.
Heat Homes Safely
- Avoid using outdoor heating equipment like BBQs or propane heaters indoors due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Ensure natural gas appliances are in good working order.
Prevent Frozen Pipes
- Insulate outdoor pipes and leave under-sink cabinets open to allow warm air circulation. If pipes freeze, leave faucets open and defrost pipes gradually using a hairdryer. Call 311 or 916-875-4311 for assistance with water shutoffs for repairs.
Clear Storm Drains
- Remove leaves and debris to prevent flooding and black ice.
Drive Safely
- Reduce speed on wet or icy roads, especially on bridges and overpasses. Allow extra stopping distance between vehicles.
Watch for Downed Trees and Power Lines
- Report downed trees blocking roadways via 311 or 916-875-4311. Stay away from downed power lines and call 9-1-1 immediately.
